Lake George Music Department Strikes Gold at Music in the Parks Festival

Four trophies. Two first-place finishes. One unforgettable day.

The Lake George Music Department continued its remarkable year of success as members of the senior high band and senior high chorus traveled to the “Music in the Parks Festival” hosted at Holyoke High School and Six Flags New England, where they earned top honors across the board.

A total of 42 student musicians participated in the event, including 29 band students and 22 chorus students, with nine students performing in both ensembles. Each group prepared and performed two selections for adjudication before a panel of judges who evaluated tone quality, pitch and rhythmic accuracy, phrasing, musicality, and expression.

The Lake George Senior High Band performed American Riversongs by Pierre La Plante and Just a Closer Walk with Thee, arranged by Don Gillis. The Senior High Chorus presented Journey On by Derrick Fox and Total Praise by Richard Smallwood, arranged by Doreen Rao.

Competing against six schools, both ensembles delivered outstanding performances. The Lake George Band earned 1st Place in the High School Concert Band Division, while the Lake George Chorus captured 1st Place in the High School Mixed Chorus Division.

The accolades didn’t stop there.

Both ensembles also received the highest overall score in their respective categories, regardless of division, bringing home a total of four trophies. The achievement follows closely on the heels of the department’s recent success at NYSSMA Majors and reflects the dedication, growth, and musicianship demonstrated throughout the school year.

“It has been a wonderful first year here as the Lake George band director,” said Mr. Miller. “The kids have grown so much this year and it is great to have their hard work recognized with this exciting achievement. I look forward to more growth and experiences in the years to come!”

For Chorus Director Mr. Alecci, the awards represent something even deeper than musical excellence.

“The thing I’m most proud of is the sense of community that we’re building,” Alecci said. “Both judges took note of the chorus’ positive energy; how they can see the friendship and connection, which has a direct impact on how we perform together. There’s still plenty of room for improvement, but we’re on a strong foundation that’s tied directly to the culture we’re creating.”

The festival results cap off an extraordinary year for the Lake George Music Department, one marked not only by competitive success, but by growth, collaboration, and a commitment to musical excellence. From the concert stage to the classroom and throughout the community, Lake George’s musicians continue to make their school proud and set the stage for even greater accomplishments ahead.
