Three students from Lake George Jr.-Sr. High School were recognized by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD) at their annual Capital Zone awards ceremony. These students were honored as outstanding Senior Leaders in Physical Education, demonstrating their dedication, positive attitudes, and leadership within our physical education programs.
Nick Haverly: A multi-year Varsity Soccer and Track and Field athlete, Nick has consistently demonstrated exceptional qualities in physical education. His teachable spirit, flexibility, and strong understanding of concepts make him a valuable member of any team. Nick leads by example, actively participates with a contagious positive attitude, and always approaches activities with a smile. Beyond his athletic achievements, Nick is a member of the National Honor Society and enjoys a variety of active pursuits including skiing, weightlifting, swimming, snowmobiling, and jet skiing. He plans to continue his athletic career while studying Mechanical Engineering at Hudson Valley Community College.

Taylor Syvertsen: As captain of the Varsity Cross Country team, Taylor led her team to an impressive 2nd place finish at the 2023 Section 2 Championships and was named Adirondack League MVP in her final season. She also excels in Varsity Track and Field. In physical education, Taylor is a natural leader, consistently participating with a positive attitude and offering support to her classmates. Her leadership extends beyond the field and classroom as president of Varsity Club and a member of the Anti-Bullying Club, Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Chemistry Club. In her free time, Taylor dedicates herself to the adaptive ski instructing team at Gore Mountain, helping individuals with disabilities experience the joy of skiing. She plans to pursue her passion for science at Siena College, majoring in Biology with a pre-med concentration and continuing her cross country career.
Mazie Collins: Mazie has showcased incredible versatility and enthusiasm by participating in an impressive five varsity sports: Soccer, Alpine Skiing (where she is a 3-year captain), Track and Field, Unified Bocce Ball, and Unified Basketball. In our Unified PE class, Mazie is known for her kindness, her bright smile, and her exceptional listening skills. Her classmates consistently share that she makes PE class fun for everyone! Mazie’s dedication to both academics and extracurriculars has earned her recognition as a scholar athlete and the Academic Global Citizen Award. She is actively involved in Drama Club, Drumline, A Capella, Jazz Band, French Club, Art Honor Society, and serves as a peer mentor for younger students. Mazie’s passion for the natural world will lead her to college where she plans to study Marine Biology with a minor in Special Education.
We are incredibly proud of Nick, Taylor, and Mazie for their achievements and the positive impact they have on our school community. Their dedication to physical activity, leadership qualities, and positive attitudes serve as a model for the study body. A special thank you to the Lake George PE Department for nominating these deserving students for this prestigious recognition from the Capital Zone NYS AHPERD.
