About Lake George Elementary School

At Lake George Elementary School, we follow the “Golden” Rule and we’re a Leader in Me Lighthouse school. All students and staff believe that treating others the way that we want to be treated leads to a respectful learning environment and a positive school climate. At the start of every school year assemblies are held for each level to review this belief and expectation for our school. Monthly assemblies during the school year are held at each level and students are recognized for their positive character in front of their peers at these assemblies. Every day, our teachers involve students in leadership experiences that help to foster positive character.

In the 2018-2019 school year Lake George Elementary School celebrated 50 years at our current location. LGES is a unique one-story building designed with large open spaces or “clusters.” In addition to outstanding special area spaces including our library, gymnasium, “Little Theater,” music, & art rooms, we have four large clusters that are divided into classrooms by moveable partitions. The “open” classrooms allow us to provide creative learning opportunities for our students.

School Hours

Our school day starts at 8:00 a.m. when students walk into their rooms. Please plan to have your child arrive between 7:45 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. You can drop off as early as 7:30 a.m. and students entering school after 8:00 a.m. are considered tardy.

Dismissal begins at 2:15 p.m. with students boarding the bus and buses will leave campus by 2:20 p.m. Student pick up will begin immediately after the buses pull off campus.

Attendance

An excellent attendance record is a top priority in Lake George Elementary School! There is a direct correlation between student attendance and academic success. Frequent absences and/or tardiness leads to serious gaps in the educational sequence and subsequent understanding for future progress.

If your child is absent, please report his/her absence to the school office at (518) 668-5714 between 7:30 – 8:15 a.m. This will certify to us that you are aware that your child is not in school. If we do not receive a phone call from you, we will attempt to contact you. This procedure enables us to ensure the safety and accountability of our students.

Students are required to bring in notes for ALL absences. A note, signed by a parent or legal guardian, which includes the student’s name, date of absence and reason for absence must be turned into the office upon return to school.

Students may be excused from part of the school day by properly notifying the main office. Students, who need to be excused early MUST SUBMIT a note to the main office before school. The note must be signed by a parent or guardian with the following information: time for dismissal and reason for early dismissal.

If the child will be out longer than 10 consecutive school days due to illness, the parent should contact the school to arrange for tutoring. The child is eligible for 5 hours of tutoring per week at the school expense.

Legal Absence

The following are the only legal excuses for absence:

  1. student illness
  2. sickness or death in the family
  3. excused absence for a medical appointment for part of the day
  4. educational (school) trip
  5. impassable roads or weather
  6. approved religious observance not regularly scheduled on the school calendar
  7. quarantine
  8. court appearance
  9. attendance at health clinics
  10. approved cooperative work program

Extended illness of a serious nature, with medical documentation, may be given special consideration by the administration.

Illegal Absence

  1. Unlawful Detention (illegal absence with parental knowledge)
Absences from classes for reasons not listed in Section 5100, but with the permission of the parent are referred to as “unlawful detentions.” Examples of this are: vacation trips with parents, visiting relatives, working or making a false statement about the reason for absence.
  2. Truancy (illegal absence without parental knowledge)
Absences from classes that are not legal and occur without parental consent are deemed to be cases of truancy. Skipping classes, leaving school grounds without permission, failing to report to school, are all considered truancies. Subsequent truancies will bear penalties ranging from increasing loss of free time, Attendance Review Board Referral to Superintendent’s Hearing.
  3. Leaving school grounds without permission
Students may not leave the building or premises without the permission of the principal, or a member of the staff. Discipline measures range from loss of free time to suspension.

Tardiness

School begins at 7:45 a.m. Students who are tardy to school (after the 8:00 a.m. bell) must report to the main office with a note signed by the parent/guardian explaining the reason. No student should be dropped off prior to 7:30 a.m., as there is no supervision for early drop offs.

Lake George Elementary School Educational Cabinet

“Educational Cabinet” is Lake George Central School District’s shared decision-making body that focuses on the Elementary School. The Educational Cabinet meets once a month and includes teachers, administrators, and parent representatives. The cabinet reviews district goals, student data, survey data ( parent-staff-students) and develops 3-5 one-year targets or goals. All staff are then assigned to action teams to help us reach those goals.

Mission

“To provide input and allow for dialogue among all of the district’s stake-holding groups to look for ways of improving student achievement within the schools.”

Action Teams

Five teams have been established to help us reach our goals both district strategic plan and one year building level cabinet goals.

  1. Goal Setting Team –will ensure academic goal setting is in place, Pre-K-6, and student notebooks are used regularly. Students will understand goal setting and the actions they can take (their plan) to improve/reach their goals.
  1. RTI Guiding Coalition – District PK-12 MTSS will be explored. The current RTI plan at LGES provides a solid foundation for tiered support, and there may be ways that our system can be improved upon. This team will work to gain a better understanding of MTSS and the Pre-K-12 Guiding Coalition’s role, while building capacity and collective responsibility for the district initiative..
  1. Service Learning Team – This team will review current service learning at LGES and determine ways to ensure that students/staff understand service learning, how we’re supporting others through service learning, and explore new opportunities to enhance service learning.
  1. Academic Goal/School-wide WIG (Wildly Important Goal) Team – Data reviewed helped us determine a focus on improving students ability to read informational texts and then describe the relationship among a series of events, ideas, concepts, or steps in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence and cause/effect. We will measure 1-year growth for all.  Lead measures or actions that help us reach the school-wide goal will be developed for each grade level.
  1. Math Night/Science Night Team– The team will focus on Community engagement/student goal setting, look at new ways to enhance these events/reach our cabinet goals.
