Biles and Fox Placed Fifth in the Nation in Broadcast Journalism

Have you ever been in a room with more than 11,000 people from all around the United States including students from Haiti and China? Thousands of kids cheering, clapping, laughing, and even standing on chairs is an amazing experience. Recently, four students from the Lake George Jr/Sr High School Business Department qualified and were able to experience this and much more at the National FBLA Conference in Baltimore, MD which was held June 26-July 2, 2018.

The Lake George Chapter of FBLA recently attended the National FBLA Conference and the Institute for Leaders in Baltimore MD from June 26-July 2, 2018.  Four active chapter members, Jack Mellon, Autumn Shaughnessy, Alice Fox and Madeleine Biles attended the conference along with one of their advisors, Mrs. Karen Breslin. There were over 71 events and over 11,000 high school attendees and their advisors from across the United States, Haiti, and China; 220 of the attendees represented New York State.

Madeleine Biles and Alice Fox competed in the Broadcast Journalism event. Over 85 teams from across the country competed in this competition and the Lake George team was highly successful placing 5th in the nation. Jack Mellon, a junior at Lake George Jr/Sr High School competed in the Public Speaking event where he was met with over 100 individual competitors from across the country. Lastly, Autumn Shaughnessy, a junior at Lake George Jr/Sr High School, the newly elected FBLA Vice President for District 5 attended the conference participating in the Forensic Accounting open event.

In addition to competing, the members learned how to improve their leadership skills as they attended the two-day Institute for Leaders conference which was held prior to FBLA National Conference. They also attended numerous professional workshops coming away with various ideas and skills that they will be able to implement at their school chapter this coming year. The students also had the opportunity to network with other FBLA members, exchanged state pins, and visit some local sites in Baltimore, MD. The Lake George Chapter of FBLA has been in existence since 2001. The chapter has had student members qualifying for various national competitions each year for the past 13 years with over 20 national winners! Congratulations to the Lake George Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America.
