Coronavirus School Closure Update May 1, 2020
May 1, 2020
Dear Lake George Families,
We hope you are continuing to stay healthy, strong, and positive during this time. We miss seeing everyone!
We have just learned that Governor Cuomo announced in his daily press briefing that all schools in NYS will remain closed for the 2019-20 school year. While this is not the outcome we hoped for, it does alleviate a certain amount of stress that comes with uncertainty. What we know from today’s press conference:
- Remote learning will continue as we stay home to stop the spread of COVID-19.
- K-12 schools and college facilities will remain closed for the academic year, and will continue with distance learning for the remainder of the academic year.
- Summer school programming will be announced at the end of May.
- Meal programs will continue
- Child care services will stay in effect for first responders and essential medical workers
This announcement will become formalized as soon as the Governor issues an Executive Order. We will let you know the details of that executive order as soon as it becomes available. We expect it will contain information about the last day of online classes K-12 and provisions for the continuation of childcare of essential employees and nutrition services that so many families have come to rely on during this time of need.
A few additional reminders
As a reminder, the state has postponed the annual school budget vote and Board of Education election (originally scheduled for May 19) until at least June 1 due to COVID-19. We are awaiting guidance on the timing, location, and manner for such elections. We will let you know as soon as we have more information. The budget process is continuing at the BOE meetings, the next one is scheduled for May 12, 2020. Our BoE meeting will be virtual.

LGES Named a NYS Recognition School
We are proud to announce that Lake George Elementary School has earned the distinction of being a 2019-2020 New York State "Recognition School." "Recognition Schools are the highest performing and rapidly improving schools across the state" Interim Commissioner Shannon Tahoe said. "Recognition Schools across the state demonstrate the relentless commitment of teachers, administrators, staff and parents, without whom this growth would not have been possible." Only thirteen percent of the schools in New York State achieved this status.
"These are exemplary public schools that demonstrate that all students can achieve at high levels with the right support and resources," Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa said, "Recognition Schools help to ensure equity for all children across New York State. The Regents and I are grateful to all of the teachers and administrators who, in concerted effort with their school communities, are guiding students toward success."
School Events for the Remainder of the Year
Mr. Cocozza and Mr. Conway and the entire LGCSD Leadership Team will be working diligently over the next weeks and months on a district and building level re-entry plan. This collaboration will allow LGCSD to be prepared for re-entry as the guidance and phases are clarified and the Pause NY guidelines begin to shift.
The building principals will be reaching out to you with school-specific information, as we are sensitive to all the culminating activities that are not able to take place. We are committed to celebrating our students’ success, even if it means an alternate format due to the pandemic.
All the district buildings and grounds will remain closed to the public until we are notified that it is safe to begin reopening with proper health and safety precautions. We are mindful that while some areas of our state have turned a corner regarding the pandemic, our area is just beginning to see an increase in cases. It is important for us to remain vigilant and continue to protect the vulnerable members of our community.
Thank you for your support, patience, cooperation, and partnership throughout this time. Warriors always come together in times of need, and we are Warrior Strong!
