Lake George Robotics Team Shocked a Packed House
All three Lake George robots made it to finals at the Queensbury Vex Robotics Tournament last weekend. One team was crowned Tournament Champion and won a design award.
“They were outstanding, total underdogs,” said Robotics Advisor Mr. Larry Stroebel.
There were 44 teams in the competition, hailing from downstate NY, NJ, Suburban Council, and Massachusetts. At the half, the Lake George team was ranked 23rd. They pulled it together under the direction of Luke Kelly and made the finals. From there, they learned how to battle for the win.
“They took apart the best team is the state in the finals to win the tournament,” said Mr. Stroebel. “To watch a student realize his potential and lead, and watch a young group learn how focused you have to be to win may have been the most satisfying moment in my 19 years. Being in a packed Queensbury gymnasium that erupted for Lake George was pretty nice too.”
The Queensbury Tournament served as a qualifier for the New York State Championship, which takes place in Syracuse in March.
UPDATE • MARCH 3, 2019
Congratulations to the Lake George Robotics teams that competed in the largest state tournament in the country with 74 of the top teams in New York State. Statistically, the odds of advancing past qualifications into the final rounds was tough, but once again, both systems reached the finals.
Team 64040A finished the tournament in third place out of the 74 teams in attendance. They earned second place in programming skills (only being edged by one point), and they were awarded one of the highest achievements – the 2019 Design Award Champion! This award exemplifies their success throughout the entire season, tournament play, and mastery of robot systems and programming ability.
Team 64040A was voted Overall BEST in NYS, qualifying the team for the Robotics World Championship in Louisville, Kentucky! This is the first time the Robotics Team has earned this achievement. It is a reflection of countless hours spent in the technology lab.
