Spanish Students Learned Latin Rhythms

Lake George Jr.-Sr. High School Spanish Teacher Jennifer Cornell applied for and received a grant from the Adirondack Chapter of USA Dance to bring Tango Fusion Dance Company to the school to conduct a day-long “Salsa in the Round” event. Over 160 Spanish students learned a few Latin dances and developed an understanding of Latin rhythms.
Tango Fusion Dance Company synthesizes Latin dance, Argentine tango, ballet, jazz, modern dance, and theater. Tango Fusion Co-Director Johnny Martinez was on hand to conduct the daylong workshops.
“We taught Bachata, Merengue, Salsa and Salsa Rueda for the more experienced dancers,” said Mrs. Cornell, who also dances with Tango Fusion in her free time. “The classes offered and level of difficulty varied according to the students’ age and experience.”
Johnny Martinez holds a BME in engineering from Pratt Institute. Before starting Tango Fusion with his wife and dance partner, Diane Lachtrupp, he was a concert dance and musical theatre performer. He performed in the National and European tours of "West Side Story,” "Damn Yankees,” and "Fiddler on the Roof.” He was a member of the Nanette Bearden Contemporary Dance Theatre and the associate choreographer of the Anabella Gonzalez Dance Theatre.
