WHAT IS NYSSB?
The Seal of Biliteracy is an award in recognition of students who have attained a high level of proficiency in one World language in addition to English by the time they graduate high school. The Seal of Biliteracy is an official stamp on your diploma. It recognizes that your are biliterate according to criteria set by NYS Education Department.

TO SHOW PROFICIENCY IN A LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH: If you choose Spanish or French, you will be required to enroll in the highest level of French/Spanish (FR221/SP200) offered in the Lake George Central School District. In the course of the class, you will complete a written project on a topic of your choice. If you choose a World language besides Spanish or French, you will complete a written project on a topic of your choice under the guidance of a fluent speaker mentor or your English Language Learner teacher. You will have to present your work to a panel of fluent speakers, and answer their questions about it. Of course, this will have to be done in the target World language.
TO SHOW PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE: All candidates will have to meet the English language requirement via the AP testing option OR to present a significant writing sample and/or live or recorded oral presentation from an English 11 or 12 class or any upper level elective class.. English Language Learners will be assessed using a rubric specific to ELL.

WHO AWARDS IT?
Both the New York State Education Department and the Lake George Central School District award the seal. The LGHS teachers of the World Language Department select potential candidates and evaluate them according to the NYSED Department criteria.

What is Biliteracy?
Biliteracy is the capacity to converse, read and write proficiently in two languages. The term proficient is referring to a speaker who, while very skilled in the use of a language, uses the language with greater formality and less familiarity than a native or fluent speaker

What level of Proficiency is required by the NYSSB?
The American Association on the Teaching of a Foreign Language (ACTFL) recognizes 4 levels of proficiency: "novice", "intermediate", "advanced", and "superior". The first three levels are subdivided into "low", "mid", and "high".
To be considered proficient under the NYSSB would be to demonstrate the skills of an intermediate high level.

Who will evaluate my level of proficiency and how?
Both an assigned fluent speaker mentor/teacher and a panel of fluent speakers will evaluate my proficiency in the target language. They will evaluate the three language modes: conversational, presentational, and interpretative. They will use rubrics based on the intermediate High level of proficiency in the language
