Thank you for your continued cooperation during these challenging times. I want to share that we’re continuing to be vigilant with handwashing, wearing masks, physical distancing, and constant cleaning at LGES. We will get through this together!
Activities: As the weather starts to get cooler, please remember that our students still go outside for Physical Education classes as well as recess almost every day. We know that the outdoor air is healthy and safe for
our students! Students should be dressed for the weather!
Morning Drop-Off For those of you that drop off your children each morning, you’ve noticed that things are a little busier this year. Some ways that we hope to keep traffic moving while keeping everyone safe include the following: 1. We plan to extend our drop off zone and will place a cone there temporarily. Please pull up to the cone if you’re in the front of the line. 2. If you’re dropping off, please make sure that your child is ready to get out once you stop. If it’s easier to pull into a parking space, please feel free to do so. 3. As long as you’re wearing a mask, you’re welcome to walk your child to the crosswalk or to the front entrance.

After School Clubs: Our staff has done an outstanding job ensuring that we can provide these meaningful and fun co-curricular experiences for our students while keeping everyone safe! More information will be sent home regarding the first round of opportunities. Here’s some important information regarding our afterschool programs:
When picking up, parents will not enter the building, but will pick up outside at 3:05 at a specified location depending on the activity. If you’re picking up, please park in a parking space and don’t drive into the bus loop. With our new procedures in place, we have found that if parents cross and wait on the sidewalk near the library entrance that things seem to go smoothly. This is obviously different from the end of the day pick up where we still would like you to wait for the buses to depart before crossing to the sidewalk.
After school transportation (our late buses) will be available as needed, and we are encouraging parents to pick up their children from our after school activities. Those students needing to ride a late bus will depart from the school at approximately 3:15 just like in years past. Arrival times home are dependent on the number of students riding the bus that day.
Please understand that we are unable to make changes regarding students being picked up or riding a bus from day to day. This will have to remain the same during the activity.
COVID-19 Health Screening: Please remember to complete the screening for each child at least every two weeks. Your child knows their username and password. If they can't remember, please just send their teacher an email and we will forward it. We would like to get everyone on the same two week schedule and the district sends out a reminder every two weeks on Sunday night. Remember, if your child has any COVID-19 symptoms, please keep them home from school until they are well. If a student has symptoms of COVID-19 at school, we are required by the state to have parents pick them up immediately. In addition the child can only return if they are cleared by a doctor, have a negative covid screening, and no longer have symptoms. Thank you for your cooperation with this procedure. Safety at LGES:Many of you attended informational sessions over the summer and/or read the information that we sent home and posted on the web page. Here’s a quick recap with some specific information regarding procedures at LGES. More detailed information can be found on our website.
- Masks will be worn by everyone when on campus or in the school - we are building in student “mask breaks”
- Everyone will physically distance when on campus or in the school (staff, students, parents)
- Handwashing and/or sanitizing will happen throughout the day & custodians will clean day & night
- We will deliver students home by bus, but drop off locations can’t be changed due to seating restrictions.
- Please don’t send your child to school if they are sick and/or exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19. Allow children to get better at home and/or see a doctor if needed. If students attend school with symptoms we must treat them as if they have COVID-19. Parents will be called to pick up their children and the child must get a negative COVID-19 test, clearance from a doctor, and be symptom free before returning to school. Again, please avoid this by keeping children home if they have runny noses, coughs, fever, headache, nausea, etc. A complete list of COVID-19 symptoms can be found on our website and is included with this packet.
- Parents will not enter the school during arrival, dismissal, and during the school day. Our greeter Mrs. Zivica will assist you as needed.
Safety Drill Practice - All schools in New York State are required to practice various safety drills throughout the school year. LGES completed our fire drills for the fall in October, and recently we practiced our first “lock-down” drill. This year we are ensuring proper physical distancing during the practice of these drills.
If possible, please plan to have your child arrive between 7:45 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. You can drop off as early as 7:30 a.m. and students entering school after 8 a.m. are considered tardy. If you are dropping your child off at school, please pull up into our drop off zone and as always, staff will assist getting your child into the school and classroom safely. PLEASE do not drop students off at school before 7:30 a.m. as the building is locked and there is no supervision. Students that arrive before 7:45 a.m. wait in the gym physically distanced until the 7:45 a.m. bell when students walk to classrooms. Students eating breakfast at school will eat in the cafeteria.
As in the past, students riding buses home will board at approximately 2:15 p.m. and buses will leave campus by 2:20 p.m. Student Pickup will begin after the buses pull away at approximately 2:20 p.m. Parents will no longer wait in the cafeteria, but rather go to the specific locations shown below. This dismissal procedure is very common in neighborhood schools and it will allow us to maintain physical distancing for students and parents during the dismissal. Parents with more than one child will go to the different locations to pick up their children. Thank you for wearing your masks on campus and for physically distancing.

We will have staff direct parents to these locations at the start of the school year. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we implement these new procedures. We will work together to keep these busy times safe for our students.
Lunch is $2.60 and breakfast is $1.65. Menus are sent home monthly and are available on our website. Free & Reduced lunch prices are available to eligible students (application enclosed) . This year we are using a new online prepayment service to deposit money into your child’s account, and more information is included with this packet. Please contact our cafeteria with any questions, or if you would like any restrictions placed on your child’s lunch account.
Please read the handbook along with your child. It is filled with information about LGES and can be found by visiting the Elementary School web page under Resources. Please return the enclosed sheet by Friday, Sept 13 indicating that both student and parent(s) have read the handbook. As always, please contact us with any questions or comments.
In an effort to efficiently communicate with our families and community we will continue to use our website and Facebook page. In addition, all notes sent home in students' backpacks will be available on the Elementary School website under the Virtual Backpack Quick Link and on Teaching Team web pages. Please ensure we have a current email address on file (you can do this on the Parent/Guardian/Contact form included in this packet) and that you are signed up for our SchoolMessenger program.
If you do not want your child’s name and/or photo and video used in any school publication, newsletter, newspaper, mailing, posting, website etc., please submit a written request to Lisa Fox at the main office in the elementary school.
LGES is a NYS Recognition School!
The New York State Education Department has determined that Lake George Elementary School is a 2019-2020 "Recognition" School. Recognition Schools are awarded that designation based on high levels of student achievement and continuous academic improvement. Only 13% of the schools in NYS were recognized as Recognition Schools. Interim Commissioner of Education Tahoe shared: “Recognition Schools across the state demonstrate the relentless commitment of teachers, administrators, staff & parents, without whom this growth would not have been possible.”

Strategic Planning at LGES
In 2020-2021, LGES will continue to focus on our district mission to “personalize opportunities that empower all students to be lifelong learners, leaders, and global citizens”.
Lake George Central School is in the fourth year of our current Strategic Plan. In conjunction with that plan, our shared decision making body (LGES Educational Cabinet) establishes 1 year building goals.

Each one of the goals has action plans & targets to help us provide an outstanding program for your children. Updates regarding our progress will continue to be forwarded & information can always be found on the district web page. Our building level committees are working hard to achieve these one year goals as well as the targets of our strategic plan.
In 2019 LGES made a decision to move away from AIMSweb assessments as a benchmarking system for ELA and Math. After a great deal of research, we determined that i-Ready was a better option for us and provides us with better information. i-Ready is administered three times a year (Fall, Winter, Spring), to all students in grades 1-6 and twice at K (Winter, Spring) to help identify student needs and strengths in reading and math. Several weeks ago, we administered our first round of i-Ready benchmarks, and we are sharing those results with you today. This letter is intended to help explain i-Ready and simplify the reports.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment given on the iPad or laptop. The diagnostic adjusts its questions based on your child’s responses. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier questions. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade, but instead to determine how best to support your child’s learning.
When you look at your child’s diagnostic report you will see a blue bar stretching up towards a green box. The green box indicates an understanding of the current grade level standards. At this point in the year, it is not likely that a student’s bar is into the green since they haven’t been taught much of this material yet.
You will also see several horizontal lines. The larger solid line indicates the middle score target for the end of the year. The smaller solid line is where your child is expected to grow from where they are now with a typical year’s growth. The dashed line indicates a “stretch” growth or a more lofty target to reach. At LGES, we will work towards stretch growth for all students by focusing on the individual needs of each child.
You’ll see a number of items listed to the right of the graph that have been scored. These Overall Domain scores are in relation to what we would expect a beginning of the year student to know. Green indicates that they’re currently on target for that skill. Yellow indicates an area of need that’s not on level requiring a focus on skills taught from the prior year. Red indicates an area that is more than one year below grade level requiring reteaching and/or intervention.
There is additional information on the report under “Placement by Domain.” It shares what was measured and some areas of focus for your child to help them improve and continue to grow.
We are hopeful that i-Ready will provide you with information regarding your child that makes more sense than our AIMSweb reports did. We are finding the information very useful for us.

The Board of Regents adopted newly revised English Language Arts and Mathematics Learning Standards on September 11, 2017. The Common Core were replaced by the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards . At Lake George Elementary School we will follow the implementation timeline developed by NYS and ensure that changes in curriculum are made in a timely manner. The new standards have been the result of over two years of collaborative work to ensure New York State has the best learning standards for our students. Over 130 educators and parents worked together to make recommendations and revise the standards, resulting in a new set of revised English Language Arts and Mathematics Learning Standards.
Thanks for your commitment to making sure that your children are in school every day and on time. I’m very proud of the achievement of our students, but the best teachers and curriculum won’t help children be successful if they’re not in school. Our attendance data for the past eight years clearly shows that students missing 10 or more days of school a year are not achieving at the same levels as their peers. In fact, there is a direct connection between poor attendance and a need for reading support or special education services. There are exceptions to this rule; however, the large majority of our students with attendance issues struggle academically and/or don’t reach their potential.
