Course Outline:

READING

By the end of seventh grade, students will be able to:

1. Read, comprehend, interpret and respond to texts such as:

A.) reference materials

B.) secondary sources

C.) journals

D.) biographies

2. Read and follow written directions

3. Analyze, interpret and evaluate ideas found in fiction

4. Maintain a personal reading list

WRITING

By the end of seventh grade, students will be able to:

1. Write a PERSONAL NARRATIVE that has: an easily understood topic; an effective lead; descriptive writing; a well-organized beginning, middle and end; expression of personal thoughts/feelings and not just descriptions of external events.

2. Write a three- to five-page RESEARCH REPORT that incorporates: utilization of library resources; basic note-taking techniques; a clearly defined topic; a tightly organized beginning, middle and end; a style of writing suitable for such reports.

3. Write ONE- and MULTI-PARAGRAPH ESSAYS suitable for interdisciplinary assignments that consist of: clearly defined topic sentences; supporting statements; closing statements that sum up the paragraph or essay.

4. Write POETRY using: descriptive language; a poetic format that clearly differs from the format used for other genre; poetic language that clearly differs from the language used for other genre.

5. (optional) Write a SHORT STORY that incorporates a clearly defined and narrowed topic; effective lead; descriptive writing; use of plot (building action, climax, resolution); dialogue.

NOTE: Each of these written pieces usually will be produced within the framework of a writing workshop and the writing process. A portfolio focusing on strengths and weaknesses will be maintained during the year.

 

LISTENING

By the end of seventh grade, students will be able to:

1. Listen to and comprehend, interpret and respond to:

A.) short reading passages

B.) film and video productions

SPEAKING

By the end of seventh grade, students will be able to:

1. Speak to present opinion, interpretations and information in:

A.) formal and informal settings

B.) large and small groups

C.) teacher conferences

2. Use certain conventions of oral discourse such as:

A.) proper posture

B.) vocal volume

C.) eye contact

D.) repetition
