Lake George is a town and village located in Warren
County, New York, approximately 50 miles north of Albany. As of
the 2000 census, the total district population equaled 6730. Lake George is the county
seat of Warren County. The village of Lake George was
originally known as "Caldwell", and is located at the
southern end of Lake George and the Adirondack State Park. The
lake flows directly into Lake Champlain which eventually empties
into the St. Lawrence River and then the Atlantic Ocean. The
village and the
surrounding area is a famous summertime tourist region. Lake
George is also known as the Queen of the American Lakes.
The original name of the lake was Andiatarocte, the lake
shut in and was named by the French Lac du Saint-Sacrement,
(Lake of the Holy/Blessed Sacrement). Historically speaking,
the lake's first European visitor was Samuel de Champlain in
1609. He did not name the lake. This honor was claimed by the
missionary Isaac Jogues in 1646, naming it Lac du Saint-Sacrement.
In 1755, Sir William Johnson led British colonial forces to
occupy the area in the French and Indian War, or the Seven Years
War. He renamed the lake to Lake George, in honor of King George
II. To secure the area, he built Fort William Henry at the
southern basin, in honor of the King's grandson Prince William
Henry. The village was on the route between the British and
French colonies and were often traversed by military forces
during the colonial forces. Towards the end of the 19th century,
trains brought tourists directly to the steam boat docks where
they would then travel to hotels further north on the lake
several times a day. As a train no longer exists in the village,
the steamboat fleet still travels along the lake for excursions
ranging from one hour to a half a day. The junior/senior high
school is located in the village of Lake George, on a registered
historical site where British forces once encamped. The
Elementary School is located approximately 3 miles south of the
secondary building on Sun Valley Drive (just east of
WaterSlide World). The Lake George Central School District
serves approximately 1,100 students in grades K-12 living in the
Towns of Lake George, Bolton, Fort Ann and Queensbury.
