Possible goal specific projects were discussed, such as:
21st Century Skills Facilitator a project to stress the importance of saving the environment and working harder in school to broaden ones knowledge for the future.
Middle States Review with our review coming up in the fall of 2007 and to be finalized the following year, we must start now naming the committee and sub-committees and most of all appointing a chairperson to coordinate the program;
Ad-hoc committee to look at the senior-year experience to make the year a more meaningful and include "real-world" opportunities, such as the committee we had a few years ago when we looked at the changes for students from 6th-to-7th grade. Deb and Patricia were interested in working on such a committee and would meet with Carmen Ross and Kim Everts who worked together this summer on curriculum for seniors.
Continuation of international cultural experience project, such as visitation by foreign exchange students who have been working in local businesses this summer. Patricia Dow will contact Dan Courtney who is the coordinator of the program for the village.
Dave stressed the importance on focusing on school achievements this year. He distributed a packet of articles entitled, "Framework for 21st Century Learning," "Appendix 1: School Academic Rigor & Support Self-Assessment Tool." The article on academic rigor included a draft of a survey that could be downloaded from the web and/or changed to be school-appropriate. The survey could be given to students, staff and parents to check on what is of most importance; what exists, or should exist at our school; what changes or differences could be made for the future. The survey can be downloaded at www.principals.org/breakingranks.
The final copy of "The Graduate Descriptors and Commencement Standards for the 21st Century" was distributed. It is being printed at BOCES and will be mailed to everyone in the district in the near future.
An article "Let Seniors Lead", which was published in the Educational Leadership magazine, was distributed for all to read and will be discussed at our next meeting. The article stresses the importance of seniors working harder to get more out of their education.
Dave reported the success of the Student Focus meetings this past year and that they will continue for the coming year. In addition he will hold Parent Focus meetings this year. Parents will be randomly selected and invited to attend a joint meeting with the principal, assistant principal, and superintendent to discuss issues of interest.
Our next meeting will be held at 2:35 on Tuesday, September 12th. Agenda will include discussion of the handouts and looking at our goals to make changes or additions on items we want to focus on this year.
