I. Professional Development and Student Achievement Goal
: A survey for collaborative teaching was presented by Nick Round and Roger Wells. The survey is intended to measure interest among faculty and to see who is already implementing collaborative teaching methods. The survey DOES NOT MEAN COLLABORATION IS BEING FORCED ON FACULTY. This is being offered as an "awareness" measure and to see who would be interested in using collaborative and/or co-teaching models.·
Please have constituents read the different strategies (they may already be doing them and not even know it) and complete the survey.
II. Nick Round proposed changing the make-up of constituent groups to include level members. It was felt that this would better serve level teachers and allow more time to discuss student achievement issues and curriculum. Note: Levels 9-10 would be combined with Trista and Roger as the facilitators.
·
Please discuss this matter with constituents and get feedback on this proposed change.
III. School Climate Goal: Preparing Students for a Multi-Cultural Experience: Social Studies Department will facilitate guest speakers from Foreign Workers Group, Chamber of Commerce and/or local businesses to talk about foreign worker populations from Russia, eastern European, and Latin countries here in Lake George during the summer. We are hoping to raise awareness about these cultures and to educate students about the economic and cultural implications resulting from the seasonal influx of workers.
In addition there is a push to create a "Speaker’s Bureau" to address black history, women’s issues, religion, tolerance, and a general awareness about other cultures.
Anyone with ideas should contact Trista Tallon, Michelle Elder, or Carmen Ross.
IV. Professional Development Goal: Giving more time on the Tuesday before First Day for planning. Exchanging our half-days in the spring for a full day in September cannot happen in 2005 as the school calendar has already been adopted by the school board. However it was proposed that the High School faculty meeting on Tuesday be moved to Thursday (just for that first week) and the morning time would be used to meet with Special Education to review IEPs, and for teachers to use as additional planning time.
·
Please discuss/review this proposed change with constituents and get feedback.
V. Technology Goal: Provide additional tech support to faculty. Bill Elder voiced constituent concern about student technology helpers having access to secure information etc. etc. Students participating in such services would not have access to any secure and/or confidential information. Students would be asked only to provide technical support such as hooking up laptops, or equipment.
We proposed a " Student Tech Expert " group that would be a group of student volunteers who would deliver equipment to teachers, set equipment up for teachers, return equipment, etc. etc. Services would include computer support and DVD/Video support. The Librarian would be considered the Coordinator of these services. Responsibilities will be reviewed with candidates for librarian position after retirement of Bill Gordon.
·
Please ask constituents for feedback on this proposal and discuss pros/cons.
VI. Technology Goal: Encourage the Use of Distance Learning. It was proposed that Linda Kissane be trained as a Distance Learning Facilitator. She would coordinate details of using Distance Learning and set up services for teachers wanting to use this service in the classroom. This hopefully would eliminate the planning and timing issues teachers face when using this technology.
·
Please discuss pros/cons with constituents.
VII. Professional Development Goal: Provide more "in-house" options for staff. It was suggested that since we have such a great staff it would be nice to "share" ideas between staff members. Many feel that instead of spending money on conferences that many times cover methods we are already doing, we could share ideas here at Lake George.
Teachers would be asked to think of instruction methods they have used and feel work, and share information with teachers. Short, mini-sharing sessions would be held at faculty meetings and/or eventually on professional development days. This would also be an opportunity for teachers wanting to try things to discuss with other teachers how it works, problems, etc. etc. Faculty would be asked: " What are three areas of instruction that you would feel comfortable sharing? (openers, review, checking for understanding, group work, etc.)
·
Please discuss and get feedback as to whether people are interested and would feel comfortable with this proposal. Have constituents write down three areas and report back to Forum.
