PRESENTATION: "CEIP" BY KAREN BRESLIN

Karen Breslin, Chairperson of the Practical Arts Department, was present to explain what "CEIP" and "COOP" students must accomplish. (A copy of the handout is attached.)

§ C.E.I.P. (Career Exploration Internship Program) is an internship program for college-bound students, who are not sure what field they want to pursue. They may apply for this program through the interview process with Mrs. Breslin, and will be assigned to "explore or job-shadow" in a field of their choosing. Students must remain in the assigned work place for a minimum of ten weeks or 108 hours. Students may choose to change "job sites" each quarter. Students are not paid in this position but receive school credit upon completion of the program. In addition, there is a classroom component every other day, in which work ethics, insurance, W-2’s, W-4’s, medical insurance and other job issues are discussed. Students generally go on to college upon graduation.

§ COOP (Cooperative Work Experience) is a program for the work-bound student who would like to work in a field of their choice during the school time. Students apply for the program through the interview process with Mrs. Breslin in the summer prior to enrollment. 300 hours are required to receive school credit and student is paid for working. In many cases students who are successful in this program are hired full-time after graduation.

§ In both programs, students must have their own transportation, have 2-3 free periods in a row or time available after school. In addition, each student must have good attendance records with no more than 20 absences and/or tardies at the end of 11th grade and they must remain in "good standing" throughout each program.

OLD BUSINESS:

§ Cara reported that she had spoken with Mr. Levin about the flashing lights that were to be placed on Canada Street in front of the school. He said we are ready to go with the lights as soon as the Village sets the forms for the lights.

§ Deb Beck presented an update on the Middle Level Committee. She distributed a complete report, which included the minutes of each meeting and a summary of sub-committees, along with State requirements and other information. Copies of handouts are attached. Discussion followed

§ Deb Beck reported on the new mentoring program for new teachers and distributed a proposal, which will be presented to the Board of Education upon approval by Cabinet and Forum. She and Rich Strauss will be talking with Bruce Levin, Mark Bessen and Dave Eagle in the near future to finalize plans for the program. They have found that new teachers with the support of a tenured teacher remain successfully in the teaching profession. This program is not an evaluation program – only a support/help process for new teachers. Mentors must keep documentation of hours spent in mentor and principal meetings; must keep a reflective journal; and must hold a mentor-mentee yearend conference. Documentation would then be sent to the State at the yearend for verification. The proposed program now goes to the Board of Education for approval.

CONSTITUENT CONCERNS:

§ Some constituents have had questions about the Middle States process. Dave mentioned that more information explaining the process is included in the head of department minutes this month.

§ There have been continued concerns about students not complying with our Dress Code.

§ Concern was raised about safety issues for students wearing headphones in the hallways. Should this danger be stressed in the handbook?

§ Concern was raised that our S.A.D.D. group should be more visible. Can more activities be planned to get more students involved.

§ A community activity board has been placed in the west hall just outside the cafeteria. Community groups were encouraged to place announcements there.

§ Community That Care’s final meeting for this year is scheduled for May 19th from 7-8 p.m. at the Lake George Village Hall.

§ The Effective Schools’ Sadie Hawkins Dance was a total success and the money raised will be used for scholarships. DVD’s of the Talent Show ’04 have been sold out and orders for more should be given to MaryAnn Gipson.
