grades 4-6
Test-in Qualifying Program
SCAT (Scholastic College Achievement Test)
Criteria 97/9 total battery scored on standardized test/or teacher recommendation
SCAT determines those students whose abilities are 4 grade levels above their present grade.
Program began 14 years ago. General guidelines for qualification: students need to score at the 70th percentile in verbal reasoning section and the 50th percentile on quantitative reasoning compared to students four grade levels above their own. Upon request from a school district, BOCES does accept on a trial basis some students who earn slightly lower scores.
Rationale: The Young Scholars Program is one way to achieve an optimal match between able students' capabilities and their curriculum.
