Brain Research
Internet Resources

Welcome to the Brain Research page. This page is an attempt to give you some internet resources dealing with brain research. I have subdivided the page into 3 areas: Brain Research, Multiple Intelligence, and Learning Styles.

BRAIN RESEARCH

Parenting On The Brain- This is an article from Education Week on brain research. This article focuses on the brain development of babies and parenting issues.

BRAIN AND BEHAVIOR- This page has several links to interactive site dealing with Brain Behavior. In addition, it has links to some book review and other links related to brain research.

DANA Alliance- The Dana Alliance, a nonprofit organization of more than 170 neuroscientists, was formed to help provide information about the personal and public benefits of brain research. Their site offers some news and event information relating to brain research.

How Can Brain Research Inform Education?- Southwest Educational Development Laboratory's web page dealing with some aspects of brain research such as Emotions and the Mind, Multiple Intelligences, and several more.

Understanding the Brain:Educators Seek to Apply Brain Based Research- This is an article from ASCD written by Phillip Cohen in 1995. In the article, Cohen talks about some of the classroom implications from brain research.

How Do People Learn?....Brain-Based Learning- This is a brief look at brain-based learning and it's impact on education.

How Do People Learn?....Brain-Based Learning- This is a brief look at brain-based learning and it's impact on education.

Funderstanding: This site is the main website for the article above. It has some other interesting topics of study beyond brain research.

Increasing Comprehension by Activating Prior Knowledge- This is an abstract from the ERIC Digest. The article refers to some brain research and how to apply it to the classroom.

BUILDING A BETTER BRAIN - Okay, this article does not have to do with brain research and it's impact on education. However, it on research findings, that relate to keeping the mind active and alert as we age.

The Human Brain Project- This site offers brain pictures, brain-related movies to download, publications and much more.

Brain Browser- This site has an applet intended for teaching brain anatomy. "Our goal was to develop an interactive program with 3D renderings that could run on machines without 3D graphics acceleration. The scenario that we had in mind for this applet is a classroom with a workstation style server and PC's/Mac's/WebPC's for the pupils."

The Los Angeles Times The Brain: A Work In Progress- This is an online article from the Los Angeles times. The article refers to recent brain research and it's findings. The site has some cool graphics and presents the information in an interesting manner.

Neuroscience for Kids- This home page has been created for all students and teachers who would like to learn more about the nervous system. Enjoy the activities and experiments on your way to learning more about the brain and spinal cord. They include numerous resources including nervous system exploration, experiments and online activities, internet resources, teacher resources and much, much more. This is a great site for students to learn about the brain and it's function in the learning process.

Mind/Brain Learning Principles - This site offers 10 Mind/Brain Learning Principles.

William Calvin's Books on the Web- This page offers an extensive list of books by William Calvin. This includes a list of books and publications that are published on the internet. William Calvin has written numerous books on the brain and brain-based research.

SURPRISING TRUTHS THE IMPLICATIONS OF BRAIN RESEARCH- "Research on the brain and learning is providing exciting insights for teachers, in many ways providing new understandings, in other ways giving authoritative confirmation for classroom practices. Below are intentionally provocative statements, each with a brief description of how this implication can be drawn from the research."

News From Neurosciences- How would it affect educational systems if everyone truly believed that the human brain could change structurally and functionally as a result of learning and experience--for better or worse? How would it affect how we teach and how students learn if everyone believed that the kinds of environments we create for learning, how we teach, and the learning strategies we offer students could result in better mental equipment they will use throughout life? In News from the Neurosciences, you will find articles that support the validity of this concept, as well as articles of current interest on various other aspects of brain research and its implications for education.

Today Show: Bringing Up Baby- "Bringing Up Baby" is an information site designed by the Today Show. The information deals with brain research as it relates babies and parenting. This is a very informative site and an excellent resource for parents or teachers.

Interactive Online Activity for "Pieces of Mind" Understanding Emotional Memory Using the Web - Here's an opportunity to use the Web to introduce your students to the anatomy and physiology of emotional memory. This interactive exercise, designed for student participation after watching "Pieces of Mind," simulates an experiment on emotional states and memory.

MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES

Multiple Intelligences- This is an article by Michael Dolcemascolo, "a staff development specialist at OCM BOCES Professional Development Center. He began learning about Multiple Intelligences from Howard Gardner and has continued to pursue classroom application of the theory by working with Carolyn Chapman."

Humor and The Multiple Intelligences- An article by Dee Dickson about how sense of humor is a basic skill that needs to be nurtured and cultivated, and can enliven any school subject.

MULTIMEDIA AND MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES- An article by Shirley Veenema & Howard Gardner about new media and learning in relation to multiple intelligences.

Multiplying Intelligence in the Classroom- Bruce Campbell shares a program, which he developed, to teach to the seven intelligences in his third grade classroom of 27 students. The plan to engage the various intelligences involves the use of learning centers and a thematic, interdisciplinary approach.

The Research Results of a Multiple Intelligences Classroom- Bruce Campbell shares the research findings from his program to teach to the seven intelligences. These are the results from the program mentioned in the link above.

Reflections on Multiple Intelligences: Myths and Messages- Howard Gardner's reflection on Multiple Intelligences after 10 years of silence. This was done in 1993.

Multiple Intelligences: A Theory for Everyone - Education World offer a look at Howard Gardner's 7 intelligences and the 8th intelligence. In addition, they offer some suggestions on how teachers can implement them into the classroom. Additional resources are also included.

CTHINK- Critical Thinking resources for primary and secondary education. This page has discussion groups dealing with critical thinking, guidelines and lesson for integrating critical thinking into the curriculum and a library of articles on the background and theory of critical thinking.

Neuroscience For Kids -- OVERALL: A+

Quite an impressive site! The main section of the site, "Explore the Nervous System," lets users read about the various parts of the nervous system, learn about the five senses, and participate in experiments, games, and activities. The site has links to additional resources about the nervous system. Educators will find resources for teaching neuroscience. Viewers can use the search engine to find specific information or to pose a question to a team of neuroscientists from around the world who have volunteered to answer questions. (Viewers should look over the already posted questions first.) Users can sign up for a free newsletter or find out about Brain Awareness Week. One of the most interesting elements of the site is a form that has been set up for users to write or paste notes that can be emailed to themselves. This is a fantastic site, full of useful information. Science and biology teachers and students will learn a lot here. The information could easily be used for interactive lessons.

Tools for Teachers
Resources for Brain Theory Research

Given that 90% of what we know about the brain has been learned in the past ten years, it is time that we as educators move past simple "right brain-left brain" theories to embrace new ideas to accommodate for learning differences in our students. This page is divided into three categories of information to guide educators to the latest research and applications for the classroom.
